Meaning of the Evil Eye: Ancient Symbol of Protection

The Evil Eye, an Ancient Symbol of Protection

Wearing an evil eye is said to ward off evil forces, which is probably why you’ve seen this famous symbol many times.
The evil eye is a talisman (powerful object) that is meant to protect you from evil or negative energy.  Sometimes others give you the “evil eye”,  so to protect against this, the ancient peoples began wearing amulets or jewelry with the evil eye symbol incorporated into them. If you wore this, the evil look would be reflected back to the person that was casting it.
Though called ‘the evil eye’, the amulet is actually the charm meant to ward off the true evil eye: a curse transmitted through a malicious glare, usually one inspired by envy.
The evil eye dates back about 5,000 years, honoured across different cultures, Greek, Egyptian, and Asia, Middle East and North Africa.
The eye symbol is also seen on planes and ships to ensure safe journey, and is widely recognized as bringing good luck, and giving spiritual protection.
